Market for sex toys has grown by 20 per cent per annum in the last three years, discovers Subroto Roy

City sexologists say the market for sex toys in Pune has been steadily growing by 20 per cent per annum for the last three years. "Most of these toys are made in China and smuggled via sea and air routes into the country. Traders peddle their stuff on the Internet and offer pay-on-delivery deals to interested parties who are emaileddetailed product brochures in advance," explained sexologist Dr Vaibhav Lunkad.

Interestingly, Mrudula Karvande, an inspector with the Pune Police Social Welfare Cell, told this reporter that it is not the young, but the aged who are using such sex toys. Said leading sexologist and psychiatrist Supriya Telang, "Many of my friends in Pune aged between 25 and 70 years use such toys, and I don't think it is abnormal. Most of these women are from affluent and financially secure families," Telang said. Dr Rajesh Maheshwari, founder president of Indian Society for Sex Medicine, said, "Inquiries for sex toys have increased from one or two a day to about 30 in the last few years. We simply guide the people to medical stores at Princess Street in Mumbai that stock such stuff," said Maheshwari. Pune Airport Customs Superintendent Uday Kannan and Y G Nikam, the police sub-inspector at the airport police station, said, they were not aware if sex toys were being smuggled into the country. Said P D Deshmukh, the DCP of EOW and Cyber Cell, "I do not know if the Internet is being used to peddle sex toys."
