A sweet way to keep the wrinkles away

Two of the world`s biggest confectionery and cosmetics giants have joined hands to develop a sugar-coated tablet that they say can dramatically slow down ageing of the skin.
The anti-wrinkle sweetie, developed by Nestle and L`Oreal, the world`s biggest cosmetics company, uses a compound found in tomatoes to promote the regeneration of new skin cells and protect old ones from damage, The Sunday Times reported.

Called Inneov Fermete, the product of nutritional and dermatological science - a cosmeceutical - is already available in parts of Europe and South America.

Patricia Manissier, head of research and development at Inneov, a L`Oreal/Nestle joint venture, said: "We have done a lot of research which shows this product works and now we`re looking for ways of improving it.

"We know that good nutrition can prevent the skin from ageing and that there are clear links between certain nutrients and skin health."

The pill is based on lycopene, the red carotene pigment found in tomatoes, combining with a form of vitamin C and isoflavone chemicals extracted from soya bean.

The paper said one drawback is the cost - the new drug will cost about £25 for a 10-day supply. In addition, manufacturers say women may not notice a difference for three months.

A cup of coffee may help banish wrinkles

Want to get rid of those pesky wrinkles? Well, then forget trying lotions and grab a cup of coffee.

Nescafe, brand of instant coffee made by Swiss-based manufacturer Nestle, has started selling a version aimed at women, and it comes with the beauty-enhancing ingredient collagen.

So, instead of applying lotions to smooth out wrinkles, users can simply rely on a cup of coffee.

Sachets contain coffee, skimmed milk and 200mg of collagen – a protein found naturally in body tissue.

The precise beauty benefits of mixing collagen with coffee are unclear, byt this product is part of a much wider trend known as “nutri-cosmetics”.

This is where food and drink manufacturers promote new products by emphasising the positive effect they can have on the hair, eyes, skin or general appearance.

“Collagen is just one popular ingredient used to lend a more skin/beauty-friendly image to a product, and is increasingly found not just in beauty products but also in food and drink products – including coffee,” the Daily Express quoted David Jago, director of trends and innovation at market analysts Mintel, as saying.

The drink has so far made its debut only in Singapore.

Laser out your wrinkles, sun Spots

When 48 year-old Margaret Miglia looked at herself in the mirror, she couldn't believe her youthful looks, free of all the wrinkles and sunspots, thanks to a new laser tool used by cosmetic surgeons.

"I had the procedure done two-and-a-half weeks ago and I love it. The experience for me was not really painful at all. It was more like a really bad sun burn," said a visibly pleased Miglia.

"My skin is smooth. The brown spots on my face are gone," she says. "It makes me feel much younger. It just feels good to look in the mirror," she added.

"Previous laser treatment for wrinkles and other textural issues like acne scarring used to create significant wounding," said Jeffrey Orringer, director of the University of Michigan (U-M) Cosmetic Dermatology and Laser Centre.

"While results were terrific, the downtime for patients was substantial, and the risks were significant. Then, as technology improved, the pendulum swung the other way, providing lower risks, but with less pronounced results. This new treatment offers both improved results with much fewer side effects," Orringer said.

In developing this new method, traditional carbon dioxide lasers were modified into a fractional format. The carbon laser beam is broken into numerous microscopically thin beams that strike the skin and vaporize sun damaged or scarred tissue.

This causes the skin to tighten, and during healing, produce collagen - the protein responsible for skin structure and appearance.

"The little micro-beams essentially vaporise small columns of tissue that take about two to three days to seal back up. During that time, as the skin heals back together, the lost volume essentially creates a tightening of the skin."

"In addition, around those columns of skin where the beam delivers heat, a very reproducible wound healing mechanism is created, which leads in part to the formation of new collagen in the skin," he added, according to a U-M release.

Besides, patients who undergo fractionated carbon dioxide laser treatment can expect a more even skin tone, as well as results that last for years, not weeks or months, said Orringer.
