Don't let the kids' vacation Make your sex life go on a Holiday

. Sunday, May 31, 2009

We understand it's not just the sun that's playing spoiler in your sex life this season, but also your brats' summer holidays. We teach you the art of bachchon se bachna

While vacation time for kids comes as great relief for school teachers, it spells a bad time as far as the school of sex is concerned.

You're anyway struggling to find private time, thanks to that 24X7 in-laws, and now, chirpy kids make for the perfect icing on the cake. The only solution to this problem is stealing every opportune moment that comes your way, and devising creative methods to keep the brat pack at bay when it comes to passion play. We lead the way.

Codename games

Don't fret if you can't seem to be able to communicate your urges in words when everyone's around.

Under the table footsie doesn't work either, lest the child ducks to pick up his dropped fork and encounters an intriguing session down below.

Chachas and chachis are always around, so there's no way nain-matakka would do the trick either.

We suggest, you build up your own love code to combat the crowd.

For example, 'I want it to rain' could mean an urge to feel wet you know where, or 'I'm getting fast food cravings' could mean desperate pangs for a quickie.

The clandestine nature of the talking will also help build the anticipation even more. Sign language is always sexier than the spoken word!

Jaldi jive

Quickies are the key to an active sex life amid kiddie presence at home. Once the sign language gets you going, lock yourselves up in a room and devour each other in record time, like the act could be ordered to stop at any time.

You never know when your li'l one knocks on the door, only to knock off that orgy in progress. Move faster, make it more intense a sense of fear only makes the whole thing more exciting and passionate.

Bath bath par

If finding a room for sex becomes difficult, what's the washroom for? Slip in for showers of bliss, and the sound of water won't let your moaning out of the walls.

Keep 'em busy

Buy new games that can be played for over an hour, get a nanny to handle them during the party, turn on cool cartoon or movie DVDs, bake their favourite dish do whatever it takes to keep them busy for a good while.

Calling their friends over to your place and arranging for a group entertainment or even holiday homework session helps, as long as you're not needed around.

Sending the kids out for hobby classes and workshops is also a good idea. Weeklong adventure tours work the best in this department.

While they're sleeping...

Thankfully, most children sleep soundly. When your youngster's fast asleep, gently latch the room door (yours
or his/hers), and make the most of your time together.

Sax can prove a great accomplice to sex, since it's soft enough to not wake up a sleeping soul, and yet strong enough to pump up the rhythm and stop the aahs and oohs from escaping your room.

Great getaways

Once you've helped your kids with their share of pampering, explain to them how you need some time off, too. Leave them at grandparents' for a weekend and take seat in a quiet resort somewhere closeby.

Don't use the pretext of travelling to another relative's, they might insist coming along, and not understand the logic.

Unnecessary lying is something you should always keep away from.

If you think your kids are old enough to understand the need for privacy, ask them if they're okay spending the night at a friend's pyjama party or at a cousin's place while mummy-daddy spend some time with each other.

Ace of base

Another smart idea is to use places the kids won't ever enter into, since they've been given clear instructions not to.

The garage, if you have one, can be a great place to let go of yourself, with the car as a seat of passion.

The basement, attic or storeroom are other options.

These hideouts are unlikely places your kids will peep into, and you won't even be missed if you slip into them. Best frequented after dark fall, though, in negligible light. Happy hiding, folks!

£100,000 for an ice-cream Van!

Former Rolling Stones member Mick Jagger fell so much in love with a vintage-like ice-cream van that he was ready to shell out 100,000 pounds to buy it.

Jagger stumbled across the van while he was strolling and became eager to purchase it, but the owner, Giuseppe Della Camera, rejected his plea, reported thesun.co.uk.

"I was working on Wandsworth Common when Sir Mick came up with his son and bought a couple of ice creams. He told me he'd really fallen in love with my van and asked me if I would consider selling it. I was stunned when he offered me 100,000 pounds," Camera was quoted as saying.

The owner, who purchased the van 10 years ago for 35,000 pounds, said he didn't let go of the van only because he had promised his 12-year-old daughter that he would one day drive her to her wedding in it.

Japanese scientists create transgenic Monkeys

.

The exploit opens up exciting prospects for medical researchers, they said.

It could eventually lead to lab monkeys that replicate some of humanity’s most devastating diseases, providing a new model for exploring how these disorders are caused and how they may be cured.

‘Great advances in pre-clinical research can be expected using these models,’ the team said.

But other voices warned of a potential ethics storm, brewed by fears that technology used on our closest animal relatives could be turned to create genetically-engineered humans.

In a study published in the British journal Nature, a team led by Erika Sasaki of the Central Institute for Experimental Animals at Keio University reported on experiments on common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), a small monkey native to Brazil.

They introduced a foreign gene, tucked inside a virus, into marmoset embryos that were then nurtured in a bath of sucrose.

The gene codes for green fluorescent protein (GFP), a substance that was originally isolated from a jellyfish and is now commonly used as a biotech marker. An animal tagged with GFP glows green when exposed to ultraviolet light, proving that a key gene sequence has been switched on.

The transgenic embryos were then implanted in the uterus of seven surrogate mother marmosets.

Three of recipients miscarried. The other four gave birth to five offspring, all of which carried the GFP gene.

In two of these five, the GFP gene had been incorporated into the reproductive cells. A second generation of marmosets was then derived from one of the two.

The work is important, because medical researchers have hankered for an animal model that is closer to the human anatomy than rodents.

Mice and rats, genetically engineered to have the symptoms of certain human diseases, are the mainstay of pre-clinical lab work, in which scientists test their theories before trying out any outcome on human volunteers.

But many disorders, especially neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, are so complex that they cannot be reproduced meaningfully in rodents because their biology is different.

Hopes for a non-human primate model have until now been dashed by the failure to insert a gene into a monkey’s sperm and eggs — the ‘germline’ that ensures that the inserted DNA is passed on to future generations rather than lost.

The first genetically-modified monkey was born in 2000. Known as ANDi (the initials of ‘Inserted DNA’ spelt backwards), the rhesus carried the GFP gene but not in its reproductive cells.

The latest exploit thus opens up hopes of eventually breeding colonies of transgenic primates with inherited traits that closely replicate human disease.

‘This is the first case ever established in the world that an introduced gene was successfully inherited (by) the next generation in primates,’ the researchers said in a press release.

Future plans include creating transgenic marmosets that replicate human diseases such as Parkinson’s and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

In a commentary also published by Nature, Gerald Schatten and Shoukhrat Mitalipov, primate research specialists in the US, praised the achievement as ‘undoubtedly a milestone’, but sounded caution.

They said marmosets were not as useful as baboons or rhesus monkeys in replicating some diseases, notably HIV and tuberculosis.

Another question was the random insertion of a foreign gene in the monkey’s genetic code. This may have caused some of the miscarriages and, if previous research is a guide, could unleash cancer.

Scientists also have to address legitimate public concern about animal welfare and the need for ‘realistic policies’ to prevent genetically-engineered babies, they warned. ‘There are many unanswered questions,’ Helen Wallace, of GeneWatch UK, a British NGO that monitors the ethics of gene research, said.

‘It’s a big step from making a fluorescent green marmoset to making a marmoset that replicates a human disease, it’s a much more complicated thing to do.

‘There’s also a very important ethical debate, firstly about the animals themselves and secondly about what this might lead to in the future, whether it might be ethically justified to genetically engineer humans

A Chinese built FT-7 jet aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force crashed over civilian areas near Mianwali, a major city in Punjab, injuring six people.

The fighter was on a routine training mission when it crashed, but both the pilots bailed out safely, the Pakistan Air Force said in a statement here.

The plane crashed 40 kilometres south of Mianwali damaging three houses. The injured were evacuated by a special C-130 aircraft to a military hospital in Rawalpindi for treatment, it said.

“On the instructions of Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, the PAF will fully compensate the damage occurred on ground and provide free medical facilities to injured persons,” it said.

A board of inquiry has been ordered by Air Headquarters to determine the cause of accident, the statement said.

Pakistan Air Force has a big fleet of Chinese aircraft, including F-7PG and A-5s. It has recently acquired fourth generation medium-range, JF-17 or thunder jets which are being manufactured jointly. These aircrafts have so far not made any public appearance.

Besides these, the Pakistan Air Force has US-made F-16 fighting falcons and French-made Mirages.

Dealing with a sexually aggressive partner

.

So, how does one deal with a sexually aggressive partner?

While some couples translate their sex drive into a wonderful chemistry in the bedroom, there are others who tend to become extra violent between the sheets.

Dr. Amit Agarwal, a Mumbai-based sexologist explains, “It’s basically the level of sex drive in partners that gets translated into their sexual behaviour. Those with a lower sex hunger will perform the act in a pleasurable way, while those with a higher sex drive will be a more aggressive. So, the need is essentially to control your partner’s sexually aggressive behaviour.”

He further adds, “The foremost thing is to understand the reason behind your partner’s aggressive behaviour during sex. Accordingly you can then decide how to handle them. It’s suggested to take measures that satisfy their sexual needs at the initial stage so that they indulge sex as an act of tenderness, without trying to resort to painfully satisfying their sexual cravings.”

Here are some ways that make love-making an enjoyable act, rather than an unpleasant intimate session. Also, expert share the way out to deal with a sexually aggressive partner...

Indulge in conversation : A sexually aggressive partner knows no boundaries when it comes to dirty talking. And it is entirely up to you how you want to convert these provocative conversations into healthy discussions during sexual moments. It’s a good way to put their sex drive at rest by indulging in more of conversations that lead to creating a comfort zone during sex.

Expert tip : Dr. Medha Sharma, a relationship counselor says, “Talking before a sexual session is beneficial for a relationship. By doing so you are allowing your partner open up and be candid so that you both can enjoy a healthy sexual act sans any discomfort.”

Make the most of foreplay : The easiest way to control your partner’s soaring sex drive is to give them a high sense of satisfaction during an extended foreplay session. Indulge in sensuous arousal acts to leave them craving for more in the bed.

Expert tip : Dr. Anupam Randhawa, clinical psychologist advices, “A healthy, prolonged foreplay will make your partner continue the act of intimacy in the same mood. Make them realise that their foreplay gestures turned you on and this will make them realise the importance of tenderness in a sexual relationship.”

Don’t repel much in bed : Remember that aggression in bed gets reflected in your partner’s sexual moves. And a sex-driven mate won’t appreciate any obstruction and interruption. A sexually aggressive mate tells her/his partner what they like, and how to accomplish it. So try and maintain your calm and let the passion build on its own.

Expert tip : Dr. Amit Agarwal, a sexologist feels, “Disrupting your partner during their sexual performance can irk them and this anger gets reflected in their sexual behaviour, which is often aggressive. So it’s suggested not to resist the love-making acts too much. However, be very clear about your desires and don’t do anything just for the sake of pleasing your mate.”

Try role reversal : It’s commonly believed that initiating sex in bed is a male prerogative and this automatically makes them sexually aggressive. But if women try to assume charge on a particular night, the male partner is also likely to feel the same level of interest from her end and thus he won’t be too demanding in his moves.

Expert tip : Dr. Medha adds, “It’s one of the easiest ways to manage your partner’s aggression during sex. Don’t let them perform as they want, rather assume the lead and mould things as per your comfort levels. This will not only result in a calming down your partner’s aggression, but will also ensure a gratifying act in bed sans any roughness.”

Don’t shy away from sharing fantasies : Conversing about sexual fantasies might not be a regular practice among couples. But if they start expressing their sexual desires with greater ease, there would be more of pleasure and less of aggression.

Expert tip : Dr. Randhawa explains, “Without any inhibitions, a sexually aggressive partner doesn't hesitate to tell the other partner exactly what they want. So the best way to control your partner’s sexual aggression is to let them speak aloud their fantasies. But you also must respond to them with an equal interest. By this, their sexual fantasies can reach you through words and not merely through aggressive sexual acts.”

Technology taking kids away from nature

.

According to Nathan G. Freier, assistant professor of HCI in the Department of Language, Literature, and Communication, with a joint appointment in Information Technology, at Rensselaer, through past centuries, technologies have offered enormous benefits to children.

But now is the time to strike a balance in terms of interaction. "Technology is good and it can help our lives, but let''s not be fooled into thinking we can live without nature," said co-researcher Peter H. Kahn Jr.

"We are losing direct experiences with nature. Instead, more and more we''re experiencing nature represented technologically through television and other media.

"Children grow up watching Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, playing with robotic pets, and taking virtual tours of the Grand Canyon on their computers.

"That''s probably better than nothing. But as a species we need interaction with actual nature for our physical and psychological well-being," he added.

Freier focussed his research on human-computer interaction with emphasis on technologies for children, social robotics, and value sensitive design.

Traditionally, the field has considered the human relationship to technology to be one of ''use''; but the field is expanding to address the many facets of human-technology interaction that include a focus on emotional, social, and moral experiences, which account for this complexity in the design and evaluation process.

According to their research, today''s technology is more sophisticated and invasive.

Children play multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), which allows for large numbers of players to interact by controlling and developing their fictional characters in adventurous game settings.

Also, video games dominate children''s media entertainment. In more recent years, inexpensive
robot pets and online virtual pets have become increasingly popular.

"It is obvious that today''s children are coming of age in yesterday''s science fiction future," Freier said.

"Children today know no other way of being, no other way of existing in the world. Our faith in the benefits of those who play a significant role in shaping our technological force is often balanced with the fears of the unknown and uncontrollable sinister force embedded within the technologies, often unbeknownst to the designers themselves.

"This process of balance - which leads to children''s intellectual, social, and moral development - will be, and already is, strongly shaped by the technological environments children inhabit.

London police is questioning an Indian-origin women for storing her mother's corpse in a freezer for 20 years.

The corpse of Gulbani Freedon Murzdan, who died 20 years ago, was discovered on Thursday in the freezer in South-east London. The police is treating the case as unexplained.

Murzdan's daughter Daulat Irani, 83, and her sister feared the authorities would discover that their mother from India had been living in the country illegally. So, instead of holding a funeral Irani and her sister, who is dead now, wrapped the corpse in a black bin liner and put it in the freezer, police said.

Police was alerted after Irani confessed her secret to a friend.

"The death is being treated as unexplained rather than suspicious. There have been no arrests and an 83-year-old woman has been interviewed under caution," a police spokesman said.

A postmortem examination of the body is due to take place at Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington on Friday.

Green-glowing Monkeys have green-glowing babies

.

Japanese researchers have genetically engineered monkeys whose hair roots, skin and blood glow green under a special light, and who have passed on their traits to their offspring, the first time this has been achieved in a primate.

They spliced a jellyfish gene into common marmosets, and said on Wednesday they hope to use their colony of glowing animals to study human Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

Erika Sasaki and Hideyuki Okano of the Keio University School of Medicine in Japan used a virus to carry the gene for green fluorescent protein into monkey embryos, which were implanted into a female monkey, and four out of five were born with the gene throughout their bodies.

One fathered a healthy baby that also carried the new genes, they reported in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

"The birth of this transgenic marmoset baby is undoubtedly a milestone," stem cell expert Dr. Gerald Schatten, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Shoukhrat Mitalipov, of Oregon Health and Sciences University, wrote in a commentary in Nature.

"Transgenic marmosets are potentially useful models for research into infectious diseases, immunology and neurological disorders, for example," they wrote.

"I am most interested in Parkinson's disease and ALS," Okano told reporters in a telephone briefing. Both are incurable nerve diseases. But Okano said animals could be created to study a range of diseases.

The researchers used marmosets because they reproduce quickly, reaching sexual maturity in about a year.

"At the moment we use mice with mutant genes that are associated with Parkinson's to search for new drugs to treat the condition," Dr. Kieran Breen, director of Research and Development at Britain's Parkinson's Disease Society, said in a statement.

"Because non-human primates are much closer to humans than mice genetically, the successful creation of transgenic marmosets means that we will have a new animal model to work with."

Last year, the discoverers of the green fluorescent protein won the Nobel Prize in chemistry -- Japanese-born Osamu Shimomura of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Martin Chalfie of Columbia University in New York and Roger Tsien of the University of California, San Diego.

The protein glows under blue and ultraviolet light, allowing researchers to illuminate tumor cells, trace toxins and to monitor genes as they turn on and off.

Rahul’s fitness secret —- boxing

. Wednesday, May 27, 2009
0 comments

Rahul Gandhi landed some hard punches on his opponents in the recent elections. Now we know where he learnt those moves.

Om Prakash Bharadwaj, India’s first Dronacharya awardee, taught him boxing for two months last year. The yesteryear sportsman and coach said the Congress MP came to him with the objective of keeping physically and psychologically fit for a busy political life.

“It was a great opportunity for me to train Rahul Gandhi for two months last year,” Bharadwaj said. “In the beginning, I was surprised... Later, I realised he was keen to have some knowledge about the art of self-defence.”

Bharadwaj (70) said Rahul (39) was greatly interested in sports. “He is a good swimmer, shooter and horse rider,” he said.

The coach rated his pupil as a great learner and very fit. “You won’t believe it but he was good and had prior knowledge of boxing techniques.”

“Knowing his busy schedule, I kept light training for him and for warm-up, asked him to run one round of his home ground. But he’d ask me if the drill was enough and run two more rounds,” Bharadwaj said.

Bharadwaj was also all praise for Rahul’s humility and manners: “One day, when I wanted some water, instead of asking an attendant, he rushed to the kitchen to fetch it.”

And it seems Rahul isn’t the only Gandhi with an interest in boxing. Bharadwaj recalled when sister Priyanka tried her hand at the sport.

“One day, Priyankaji showed an interest in working on the punching pad, saying ‘main bhi boxing karungi’.”

Kuwait elects first Women MPs

. Tuesday, May 26, 2009
0 comments

Kuwaitis have voted for change in the country's second election in one year by electing the first four women candidates to the parliament, which has been male-dominated for almost half a century.

The vote on Saturday was the third in just under three years after Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah dissolved the outgoing parliament in March following a standoff between MPs and the government.

Kuwaitis voted 21 new members into the 50-seat parliament and reduced Sunni Muslim groups to a minority as the country grapples with political turmoil that has frozen the country's economy.

Massuma al-Mubarak, one of the four women elected, was first by a large margin among the 10 top positions elected to the parliament from her district.

She also was the country's first female cabinet minister.

Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra in Kuwait said: "This is definitely seen by many people as a female revolution here in Kuwait ... really a historic day.

"There is a new mindset here in Kuwait ... there is a wind of change in this country and it's definitely going to reverberate across the gulf region."
The three other women elected in the resounding victory are liberals Aseel al-Awadi, Rola Dashti and Salwa al-Jassar, an independent.

Ten MPS are elected from each of the five districts.
f
"In the third constituency district, Aseer al Awadi and Rola Dashti ran against the most charismatic Islamist and Salafist, people who have dominated political life in Kuwait over the last ten years," Ahelbarra reported. "And they got more votes."

US-educated

All the four women were educated in the United States and hold doctorate degrees in either political science, economics or education.

Kuwaiti women, who make up 54.3 per cent of the 385,000 eligible voters, were running in the elections for only the third time after they were enfranchised in 2005. They won the right to vote in 2006.

Sixteen female candidates were among the 210 hopefuls standing for the 50-seat parliament.

Final results were expected later on Sunday.

Voter turnout was less than in previous years with only 56 per cent of Kuwaitis going to the polls.

Sunnis suffer

Kuwait has no officially recognised parties as candidates belong to either a political group, a tribe or they run independently.

But the election results showed Islamists losing ground.

The two mainstream Sunni groups, the Islamic Salafi Alliance and the Islamic Constitutional Movement, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, were dealt a heavy blow, winning three seats compared to the seven they held in the previous parliament.

The Shia Muslim minority gained significant seats, almost doubling their strength from five to a possible nine.

The resounding victory may offer hope that the political infighting that has frozen development will ease.

But under Kuwait's law, a new cabinet must be formed before elected MPs are able to hold their first formal session after two weeks, a process that could potentially be stalled by the government.

Macho guys don't always get the Girl

.

In a study on men from South American groups, called Waoranis -scientists have found that the macho guy do not always get the girl.

An international team of anthropologists working in Ecuador conducted the study.

"In 1988, Napoleon Chagnon published evidence that among the famously warlike Yanomamo of Venezuela, men who had participated in a homicide had significantly more wives and children than their less warlike brethren. Our research among the Waorani indicates that more aggressive warriors have lower indices of reproductive success than less warlike men," said Stephen Beckerman, associate professor of anthropology, Penn State.

The Waorani are rainforest manioc horticulturalists and foragers, known for warfare and murder. They practiced their violence on each other as well as on outsiders. Eventually, over a period of 14 years, the missionaries pacified all the sections of the Waorani population, bringing an end to the aggressive warfare and raiding.

"In light of the documented abundance of wild resources, resource limitation cannot be considered the cause of warfare among the Waorani," said Beckerman.

The Waorani Life History Project looked at how a man's participation in raiding correlates with his survivorship and that of his wives, the number of his wives and the number of children he produced and their survivorship.

For the study, the researchers interviewed men in 23 settlements, focussing mainly on any man old enough to have experienced warfare before the pacification that could be found and who agreed to the interview.

They collected Waorani men's genealogies, reproductive history, narrative personal life history and warfare history. The raiding database contained 95 men.

"Our sample of warriors includes both living and dead men. We ranked aggression by the number of raids they participated in. Our analysis is free of the problem caused by the inherent correlation of the warrior's age with both participation in raids and reproductive success," said Beckerman.

The researchers found that more aggressive men do not acquire more wives than milder men and they do not have more children as well as their wives and children do not survive longer.

In fact, warlike men have fewer children who survive to reproductive age.

Deleted Facebook pics stay online for Months

. Sunday, May 24, 2009

User photographs can still be found on many social networking sites including Facebook after people have deleted them, British researchers said Thursday.

The researchers posted photographs on 16 popular websites and noted the web addresses where the images were stored, before deleting them.

But researchers said that although the images appeared to have gone, they were still able to find them 30 days
later on seven sites, including Facebook, by using the web addresses.

The findings by a team from UK-based Cambridge University raise questions about the ability of users of the sites to permanently delete potentially embarrassing photographs.

Special photo-sharing sites, such as Flickr and Google’s Picasa, fared better than Facebook and Microsoft’s Windows Live Spaces removed the photos instantly, the research found.

Joseph Bonneau, a member of the research team, said “When you delete a photo, many of the sites don’t actively remove it, they basically just wait for it to be overwritten. In theory, the photos could take months to disappear.”

“They have a responsibility to ensure users’ privacy, and they are not fulfilling that responsibility.” he added.

A spokesman for Facebook said that deleted photographs may continue to exist for a short time elsewhere.

“When a user deletes a photograph from Facebook it is removed from our servers immediately, However, URLs to photographs may continue to exist on the Content Delivery Network after users delete them from Facebook, until they are overwritten” the spokesman told the BBC.

Is your Mouth okay to kiss?

.

Whether you’re about to kiss your girlfriend or begin a job interview, you need to know whether your breath is sweet and clean.

Tel Aviv University (TAU) researchers have come up with a tiny breath test which lets you know whether malodorous bacteria are swarming all over your mouth. A blue result suggests you need a toothbrush. But if it’s clear, you’re “okay to kiss”.

The ‘OkayToKiss device’ comprises a colour indicator and saliva collector.

Scientists believed that only one population of bacteria (the gram-negative ones) break down the proteins in the mouth and produce foul odour.

But Mel Rosenberg, of TAU’s Faculty of Medicine, recently discovered that gram-positive population of bacteria are bad breath’s bacterial partner.

These bacteria appear to help the gram-negative ones by producing enzymes that chop sugary bits off the proteins that make them more easily degraded. This enzymatic activity, present in saliva, serves as the basis for the new test.

“All a user has to do is dab a little bit of saliva onto a small window of the ‘OkayToKiss’ kit,” explained Rosenberg.

“‘OkayToKiss’ will turn blue if a person has enzymes in the mouth produced by the gram-positive bacteria. The
presence of these enzymes means that the mouth is busily producing bacteria that foster nasty breath,” he said.

Apart from its social uses, the test can be used as an indicator of a person’s oral hygiene, encouraging better health habits, such as flossing, brushing the teeth, or scheduling that long-delayed visit to the dentist, said a TAU release.

Fish boosts brain power in middle Aged men

Increased levels of vitamin D - synthesised in the skin following sun exposure and found in certain foods such as oily fish - are linked to improved cognitive function in middle-aged and older men, says a new study.

University of Manchester scientists in collaboration with colleagues from other European centres compared the cognitive performance of more than 3,000 men aged 40 to 79 years at eight test centres across Europe.

The study has been published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

In the study, researchers found that men with higher levels of vitamin D performed consistently better in a simple and sensitive neuropsychological test that assesses an individual's attention and speed of information processing.

"Previous studies exploring the relationship between vitamin D and cognitive performance in adults have produced inconsistent findings but we observed a significant, independent association between a slower information processing speed and lower levels of vitamin D," said lead author Dr David Lee, in Manchester's School of Translational Medicine.

"The main strengths of our study are that it is based on a large population sample and took into account potential interfering factors, such as depression, season and levels of physical activity.

"Interestingly, the association between increased vitamin D and faster information processing was more significant in men aged over 60 years, although the biological reasons for this remain unclear.

"The positive effects vitamin D appears to have on the brain need to be explored further but certainly raise questions about its potential benefit for minimising ageing-related declines in cognitive performance," the expert added.

Introducing The Fuel-Efficient Cow

.

As new fuel efficiency standards for cars make news in the United States, scientists in Canada are already developing more fuel-efficient, and more polite, cattle.

The research promises to lower costs to farmers by reducing the amount of feed needed for raising cattle. It could also help the environment by reducing the number of methane released into the atmosphere, where it is a climate-warming greenhouse gas.

"Ruminants produce a lot of methane; three cows equal one [mid-sized] car" in terms of global warming potential, said John Basarab, an agricultural research scientist for the Alberta government.

"In Alberta alone there are more than six million cows, and in the U.S., there are over 100 million," he said. That's a lot of methane.

Beyond Professionalism

A bright young man in Kolkata ended his life after he was sacked by his employer. It revealed the ugly side of corporate mechanism. In these times of economic recession, companies cannot escape the responsibility of showing concern to their employees, analyses Nasreen Khan

Twenty five-year-old Atanu, a designer with a national daily, was at his wits end. His newly- married wife was pregnant and he had been handed the pink slip out of the blue. How was he to provide for his yet-to-be born child and his

family? He confessed to a colleague that he felt like committing suicide. Thirty seven-year-old Rashid was based in the UK and was homesick. He wanted to come back home, but he had no job to come back to. His family was telling him to stay put and he was finding it increasingly difficult to stay in an alien country. He took an overdose of drugs. Thankfully it was not fatal. Sharad (22) was devastated when he lost his job at the BPO. From a sudden rise in the economic condition, he was back to square one. It didn’t help to have to answer to his family how he blew up his fat salary treating friends and partying believing that the pay would come every month. He had locked himself up in his room, scaring his family of an impending suicide. These are the less scary stories. But all are not alike.

A bright young engineer, fresh out of college recruited right from the campus to the hallowed house of Infosys, had no reason to be depressed, leave alone commit suicide. But then that’s exactly what he did. Why? Investigations revealed the ugly face of corporate mechanism. A close look reveals that the recruitment, training and dismissal procedures are the whirlpool waiting to engulf many more Abhijit Mukherjees.

When a close friend reacted in anger to his cousins’ only son’s suicide, I wondered why people commit suicide in the first place. The subject of depression or suicide has been discussed enough. According to Freud when anger is turned towards oneself then the person gets suicidal. Science says that lack of certain chemicals in the brain causes a person to commit suicide. Those at risk are mostly the younger lots, usually male, who have no jobs and who indulge in drug abuse or alcoholism.

With recession resulting in job crunches and lost business, the mental scenario is as bad, if not worse, than the financial one. There are various explanations for an individual committing suicide. The psycho analytical explanation is that when aggression is turned inward, the individual may actually target self and cause harm. This could be an impulsive act. The cognitive theory explains suicide as an act out of frustration that results in aggressive expression, which, if blocked by a social authority or personal inadequacy, gets directed towards the self and the individual causes self-harm. This coupled with the feeling of helplessness causes temporary loss of self-control and the individual ends his life.

Then there are individuals who inflict self-harm. They are usually people with strong, intense emotions with a heightened sensitivity to inter personal rejection. Such people just cannot accept failure or rejection of any sort, and cause grievous harm to themselves. There are some attention-seeking individuals who have learned through their act that they can have their way through what laymen usually term emotional blackmailing. They end up committing suicide accidentally. The bio chemical explanation for suicides is reduced serotonergic activity in the brain.

Whatever the theoretical explanation behind suicides is, the socio-psycho situations are to a large extent within our control to help stop such shocking incidents that leave behind deep scars for others to bear. There is a lot one can do to help. Individuals, parents and corporates can play a significant role to thwart instances of suicide. While individuals must learn to accept what is socially termed as failure and come to terms with their strengths and weaknesses, parents play a major role in preparing the children to acquire such traits.

“Parents must identify the abilities within their children,” says neuro-psychiatrist, Dr Sabyasachi Mitra. The nuclear family structure has thrown up units of two or single child on whom the parents shower all their attention and prejudices. Parents want to live their untold stories through their children. “Sometimes parents push their children to do or attain certain things, which could well be beyond their capacities. Most importantly, parents are unaware of different avenues available for their children,” he says. For example, the pressure to study science alone is still very high among the urban population. Lack of formal education is socially not acceptable and so a child, who might be very good at painting or some other activity, will still be expected to do well academically to be acceptable. There is a serious need for placement counseling for the parents as well. Parents should support the strengths of the child and not harp upon the weaknesses and not push the child towards unattainable dreams.

Kolkata-based psycho analyst Paromita Mitra Bhowmick is of the view that in the extreme case of depression chances of suicide are lesser. “It only starts when you are recovering from that phase and that is delicate,” she adds.

In the current scenario, the role of the corporate is very important in protecting individuals from ending their lives. They recruit huge numbers even when they know very well that they cannot possibly accommodate them all. The process of elimination that begins is too harsh and demoralising. “Corporates must identify and understand that they have a social responsibility. They must chew only as much as they can swallow. They must refrain from selling high hopes to candidates,” Mitra elaborates. The process of online exams and the automatically generated letters informing them of their failure lacks human touch. This lack of one-to-one emotion can be very dangerous. The high intensity of emotions that is not expressible, results in rage and helplessness, which could turn an individual suicidal. There is extreme lack of counseling and there are no risk management strategies. It is imperative that corporates provide counseling throughout the process, both before, after as well as during the recruitment. “We cannot just lose these lives. We must nurture them through difficult times,” he stresses.

Fourthly, every recruitment process must make use of psychometric assessment of the candidates to identify the vulnerable individuals and to handle them accordingly. Last, but not the least, the corporate responsibility to give stress management, as is compulsorily provided in the West, must not be ignored. Elaborating on the responsibility of the company in handling stress management, Bhowmick says that there are some companies, which do have such programmes, some of which I myself have attended.” But there indeed is a need for that.

Hopefully, with adequate care and show of concern, we can save lives from being lost in this mad bad world of survival of the fittest.

Bollywood Queen Aishwarya reveals her travel and Beauty tips

. Thursday, May 21, 2009

One of the downsides of being an international name is that you live most of your life out of a suitcase.

Albeit a big, glamorous, designer chunk of luggage.

That's certainly the case for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

A big star in her own right, she became Bollywood royalty after marrying Abhishek Bachchan.

Roles outside of India in movies like Bride and Prejudice, Mistress of Spices and The Pink Panther 2 has led to lots of travelling around.

So what does Aishwarya always pack with her for these never ending voyages?

Things to make life taste that little bit sweeter:

"I have to have my huge handbag with me with all of the things that I could possibly need, from my little first aid kit to, of course, your little freshening up products - your essentials. Your mints, if you can have a bottle of mouthwash as well I'll stick it in there."

And looking good is always important for a former Miss World:

"I'll always have my emery board because I hate things getting caught. I'll always have my white stick for a quick fix if things mess up on the road. You'll need stuff for your hair, a clip, a comb, a little bit of shine."

Despite dazzling on the red carpet at the recent Cannes Film Festival, an event she's often attended and has served on the jury of, Aishwarya claims her wardrobe is only glamorous when it needs to be:

"Otherwise (it's) very casual, relaxed and comfortable. Comfort is the most essential element for me and that's what I really go with. I think it's important for fashion not to rule you, for you to enjoy fashion, and while it would be great to wear the colour of the season I think it's important to enjoy what you're wearing. That is what will dictate my choices more than necessarily just the silhouette or the colour or the style of the season."

World school girl dragged to Madh resort, Raped

A 13-YEAR-OLD student of an international school was yanked into an autorickshaw at Charkop market around noon on Tuesday, taken to a Madh Island resort, and raped by her 25-year-old kidnapper. The case was filed at Charkop police station around midnight.

The Std VIII girl said she did not know the man. But armed with a sketch based on her description of the accused, the police arrested a drunk Pritesh Dinesh Doshi from his Malad house and booked him for kidnapping and rape. Doshi already has cases of theft registered against him.

Don't scream

The girl was hanging out at the Charkop market with two of her friends, both younger, when Doshi came in an auto and dragged her inside. He throttled her neck and asked her not to scream.

He then took her to a resort at Dana Pani near Madh Island and allegedly raped her. At around 3 pm, an auto driver found the girl crying on the road and took her home. She told the story to her worried mother who was looking for her after hearing about her abduction from her friends.

The mother then informed her husband, an interior decorator who was out for work in Nagpur, and took the girl to the police station. The auto driver who helped the girl led the police to the auto driver who had helped kidnap her. After that, tracing Doshi was easy.

"The police were slow on getting into action. They moved only after local people gathered to protest," said a neighbour, requesting not to be named. "We will take Doshi for medical test at Nagpada. The girl has also been sent for a medical test to the Nagpada hospital," said police sub-inspector from Charkop Anil Survase.

Give your hair that Lustrous shine!

.

With the sun beating down on your tresses, it’s difficult to maintain that lustrous shine. But what’s the point in hiding under a hat or bandana all the time. A few simple tricks will help keep your mane in top shape.

Hair care experts like Edwin Chapiseau of Jeane Claude Biguine and Aalim Hakim advise customers to use hair masques to give tresses an added boost of moisture. Using leave-in conditioners during the summer can protect hair from drying out.

Serums work like sunscreens on the hair.. they cut out UV rays and protect hair fibre from damage. Remember that coloured hair which is exposed to the sun for long hours tends to lighten. Choose warmer colours like auburn, mahagony and cinammon that look good on Indian skin and won’t loose their richness. Lighter shades like brown and blonde tend to become too light, cutting out the shine.

Chop chop
Ity Agarwal of Psalm 23, the Bandra-based salon, recommends textured bobs as the ‘it’ look of the season. “All you need is the right mindset to be able to wear a bob,” she says. “There is a variation for every face shape and attitude.” Agarwal advises those with round faces to get an bob with an asymmetrical front which will balance the plumpness of the cheeks. A straight fringe can be avoided as it will only enhance the face shape.

Paired with side-swept bangs, the bob can end just at the jawline making it the ultimate summer cooler. Use lighter colours to highlight the layers in the back and front.

Blowdrying hair is to be avoided during the summer. As the humidity levels in the city won’t allow your perfectly blow-dried coif to remain intact, just rely on a towel-dry.

Wavy hair is in and can be accentuated with a little mousse for a sexy day look. For an easy-breezy night look, use rollers to get those big curls. Separate them using your fingers and pin them up into a loose bun with sequined clips. This five-minute routine will have you turning heads all night.

How to win a woman’s heart

. Tuesday, May 19, 2009

According to the study, which was conducted by Northumbria University researchers, stubble is the way to win a woman’s heart. As for the reason, why women find men with stubble attractive: they find them tough, mature, aggressive, dominant and masculine and the best romantic partners.

The findings of the experiment, carried out on British women aged 18 to 44, could explain the appeal of actors such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt who cultivate their unshaven look. The explanation for the preference is not clear, but experts in human evolution say that that facial hair may be a signal of aggression because it boosts the apparent size of the lower jaw.

The research team believes that stubbly men may offer women the best worlds - not too strongly masculine, but mature and with the potential to grow a full beard. The researchers carried out the study using computer technology to alter pictures of 15 men’s faces. Five levels of facial hair were used - clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, light beard and full beard.

The pictures were shown to 76 women who were asked to rate them for masculinity, aggression, dominance, attractiveness, age, and social maturity. They were also asked how desirable each man would be as a short-term or long-term partner. Faces with full beards were judged to be the most masculine, aggressive and socially mature. They were also believed to look five years older.

They were rated the least attractive and the worst choice for a short-term relationship. Men with light beards were considered the most dominant. Those with light stubble were rated the most attractive and as the ideal romantic partner for short or long term.

10 workouts for Shapely butt and thighs

.

Do I have a big butt?’ Or ‘do I look fat in this pair of skinny jeans?’ Have these questions been bothering you? Are you conscious of those thundering thighs and your not so perfect posterior?

Well, you are not alone. Many of us share the same woes of being bogged down with a bad-looking butt and thunder thighs.

While women tend to hide them behind over sized kurtas and long skirts, men have a grave time dealing with excess flab in these problematic areas.

So, to bring you out of that jinxed situation, we list down ten workouts, which are sure to hit bull’s eye (read your butt and thighs) and give you a shapely body.
Sqauts

Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your hips, butt and thighs.

How to do it: Take a chair and stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping the back straight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Let your butt lightly touch the chair and then squeeze in the butt to stand up.

Duration: Begin with 2-3 sets of 8-12 repetitions and take it up to 10 sets of 10! After you do 10, hold in the squat position for 30 seconds, and then continue with the next set. One can use weights for added intensity.
Lunges

Lunges make a challenging exercise as they work on so many muscles simultaneously. One session of lunges works on your glutes, hamstrings on the front leg and quads and calves at the back.

Something that makes lunges an interesting workout is the fact that there are many variations to it, with the drop-knee version being the most basic lunges, yet one of the harder ones to do.

How to do it: Stand with your feet about 3 feet apart. Both knees should be at 90-degree angles at the bottom of the movement. Now, bend both your knees, with your back knee touching the floor. The upper body should be straight and abs in while you push through the front heel and back.
Step-ups

This is an excellent exercise for the glutes, provided you use a step that's high enough. Just make sure your knee is bent to 90 degrees or less to keep it safe.

How to do it: Stand in front of a 15-inch platform or a step. Place one foot on the step, pushing through your heel on to the step. The key to make the best out of this move is to concentrate all your weight on the stepping leg. You'll feel the intensity as you take it slow and concentrate on your working leg.

Duration: You can start with 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 16 reps and then increase the repetitions as per your requirement and strength.
Hip Extensions

The hip extension exercise targets the largest muscle in the body - the gluteus maximus.

How to do it: Get down on all fours, keeping your abs tight. Now lift one leg up, with knee at an angle of 90-degree till the bottom of the foot faces the ceiling and the hip, thigh and knee are parallel to the floor. Keep your neck straight and don’t arch your back. To increase the intensity you can hold a dumbbell behind the knee or use ankle weights.
Kick boxing

It's another interesting workout that can help you tone-up your thighs and butt. Controlled kicks affect your hips and thighs, while combining it with punches helps work out your abs. One can burn up to 500 calories with 45 minutes of kickboxing.

How to do it: Start with your left leg with 10 front kicks, and then go upto 10 side kicks. Follow the same set with your right leg, continuing this sequence up to ten times.
Dance your way!

It’s not just work outs, aerobics and yoga also make for an ideal workout for your butts and thighs. If adding fun, excitement and variety to your fitness regiment is on your mind, better enroll yourself in one of the Latin dance forms.

The Cuban motions, the hip motions and leg twirls will surely work wonders to tone up your butt and thighs and you won’t even feel the strain. Some of the dance forms that work well on butt and thighs include:

Salsa: This involves a lot of movement in the lower part of the body. On an average, on can burn 10 calories per minute in a salsa session.

Jive: Jive is famed for its high-intensity. The full body work-out that it gives, helps you burn around 500- 600 calories an hour.

Tango: This dance form is great for women, as they are required to bend down from the hip. And these repeated dips and downs provide a strenuous exercise to their butt.

Cha-Cha: Even this dance form is notorious for its extensive and exaggerated hip movements that help you tone down your hips and lend a good exercise to the thighs.
Vajrasana:

This asana not just reduces flab from the thighs and hips, but also stretches the abdominal muscles, promoting digestion and stimulating blood circulation.

How to do it: Get in the cat stretch pose. Keep equal distance between your knees and hands. This is the primary position. Inhale deeply. Slowly raise your right leg towards the back till it is parallel to your back. Now, raise your lower knee and bring it towards your head. Turn our neck towards the back. Balance the body in this pose.

Exhale and bend down your neck and right knee. Bring your right knee between the arms and attempt to touch the nose. Raise your back upwards. Hold yourself in this pose for a while. Place back your leg near the knee and straighten the neck. Similarly repeat this with your left leg and complete the cycle.
Veerbhadrasana

This asana strengthens and stretches your legs, giving good work out to the thighs, apart from improving digestion and relieving constipation.

How to do it: Stand with feet apart, arms above your head, palms together. Turn to left placing your left foot 4-5 feet in front of your right foot, toes pointed forward.

Bend the left knee as shown, bend backwards and look up. Hold for 10 - 30 seconds. Push your hips up and down for 20 times. Repeat with other leg.
Kapotasana

Targeted at toning your hips and thighs, this asana opens your chest and shoulders as well.

How to do it: Bend your right knee and swing the leg forward, bringing the right knee outside your right hand while releasing the top of your left leg to the floor.

Square the hips towards the floor. Take padding under the right side of the butt as necessary to bring the hips square. Try the following variations:

Bring the torso down into a forward bend over your right leg. Let the weight of your body rest on right leg. Continue squaring the hips and breathing into the tightness.

Make sure the top of your left foot keeps pressing down into the mat. Come back up, bringing your hands in line with your hips. Bend your left knee and reach back for left foot with your left hand. Draw the foot towards your butt, stretching the left thigh. Square shoulders to the front of the room.

Release your left foot, curl the left toes under and step back. Repeat pose on the other side.

Duration: Begin this asana with five rounds and increase gradually.
Utkatasana:

Utkatasana makes the ankles strong and aids in developing the leg muscles evenly. It removes the stiffness in the shoulders and corrects minor deformities in the legs. It further tones the abdominal organs and the back.

How to do it: Stand straight with feet together. Raise arms so parallel to ground, palms down. Bend the knees and raise heels as shown. Hold for 10 - 30 seconds. Start moving your hips ups and down for 20 times. Resume starting position.

(With inputs from fitness expert Kiran Swahney, dance expert Nanda Kundu and yoga expert Usha Chengappa or Bharat Thakur Artistic Yoga)

Duration: Initially practice this asana five times and slowly increase it.

Duration: Initially practice this asana five times and slowly increase it.

Duration: One can start with 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 16 reps and then increase gradually.

Duration: One can do 1- 3 sets of 10 to 16 repetitions and increase at later stages.

Former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov Sarah Palin is defending Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who created a stir at last month's Miss USA pageant when she said marriage should only be between a man and a woman. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/images/160509/forinside.jpg

The former vice presidential candidate says in a statement, "The liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable."

Questions about her work with gay marriage opponents and nearly nude photos taken of her when she was a teenager had put her title in jeopardy, but pageant owner Donald Trump decided to let Prejean keep her state crown.

Palin says she respects Prejean for staying true to her beliefs and can relate to her "as a liberal target myself." Palin was a runner-up in the 1984 Miss Alaska contest.

Agni-II test-Launch postponed

. Saturday, May 16, 2009

The test-launch of surface-to-surface intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) Agni-II, that was scheduled between Tuesday and Thursday, has been postponed to next week. Sources at the integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea said the test, considered a user trial, will be carried out after the counting of votes.Hectic preparations were on at the Wheelers Island for the last one month for the test of the Agni-II missile, which has a strike range of over 2,000 km. All the preparations have reached the final stage but the defence scientists are waiting for the government’s nod, a source said. The source further said that usually a missile is tested after the DRDO scientists receive green signal from the Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs and then clearance from the Lab Authorisation Board of DRDO. ‘‘If the scientists get ‘go ahead’ signal from the Cabinet, then the missile may be tested from the Orissa coast anytime between May 19 and 21.’’ The Agni-V, capable of hitting targets at a distance of 5,000-km, would derive most of its sub-systems from Agni-II though they would need sufficient scaling. Besides, there is a plan to develop Agni-IV as an intermediate step between Agni-III and Agni-V, said a defence scientist.‘‘We have the capability to go in for even longer range missiles but it is the political leadership which has to take a decision. With the present scenario we are capable of developing the inter-continental ballistic missiles which can hit targets beyond the range of 10,000-km,’’ a defence scientist maintained.
