The accused, Kalandi Palai alias Kalia, was arrested on Thursday and confessed to the crime during police interrogation the same day. "Kalia has confessed, but the medical examination report is awaited," Bhadrak superintendent of police Kishore Kumar Dangayat said.
He said Kalia was working as domestic help at Golak Jena's house for the past three months. On Wednesday afternoon, Jena's four-year-old niece Jhuma went missing.
It later came to light that Kalia lured her while she was playing in the backyard of the house and allegedly raped her. He later strangled her to death and disposed of the body.
Jhuma's body was recovered near the village pond on Thursday. Police said Kalia was mentally unstable and had been to jail several times in the past for various crimes. They have also arrested the two men who helped him dispose of Jhuma's body..
