India will 'Renegotiate' emission reduction target

India on Tuesday said that it would not "negotiate or renegotiate" the UN Framework on Climate Change but will "renegotiate" the emission reduction target which the developed nations have to take at the Copenhagen meet slated in December.

"We are not negotiating or renegotiating the UN Framework on Climate Change as expected by the industrialised nations.

We are renegotiating the greenhouse gas emission reduction target which the developed countries have to take and we are in discussion with other nations like Brazil, China and G-77 on the issue," Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said at a press conference.

He maintained that there was no way India would take any legally binding emission reduction target "as by doing so we will be jeopardising our energy consumption target, transportation expansion and most importantly our agricultural and power production which is needed for poverty elimination."

Blaming the developed countries in failing to meet their targets, the minister pointed out that they took the responsibility of reducing their emissions by 5 percent by the year 2020 as compared to 1990.

"But in actual there is almost 10 percent increase in the GHG emissions ... therefore the target which has been set has not been met, what they had legally entered into as part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and later Kyoto Protocol."

Bone marrow extract therapy after Heart attack helpful

.

A new study has found that an extract derived from bone marrow cells is as effective as therapy using bone marrow stem cells for improving cardiac function after a heart attack.

The study was conducted in mice using a novel stem cell delivery method developed by researchers to show that the extract from bone marrow cells is as beneficial to cardiac function as are intact, whole cells.

Both the cell and cell extract therapies resulted in the presence of more blood vessels and less cardiac cell death, or apoptosis, than no therapy.

The study also showed that heart function benefitted despite the finding that few of the injected cells remained in the heart at one month after therapy.

"Peer-reviewed medical literature is controversial as to whether bone marrow cells differentiate into cardiomyocytes, or cardiac muscle cells, but there is general agreement that stem cell therapy with these cells results in some level of functional improvement after a heart attack. The exact mechanism for this is not yet clear,” said Yerem Yeghiazarians, MD, study author, cardiologist and director of UCSF's Translational Cardiac Stem Cell Development Program.

“Our results confirm that whole cells are not necessarily required in order to see the beneficial effects of bone marrow cell therapy," Yeghiazarians added.

Researchers are investigating these new therapies to improve cardiac function after heart attack in an effort to prevent heart failure.

"Current therapies improve symptoms but do not replace scar tissue. Our hope is to use stem cells to decrease the scar, minimise the loss of cardiac muscle and maintain or even improve the cardiac function after a heart attack," Yeghiazarians said.

The researchers are conducting further studies to evaluate bone marrow cell and extract therapies in order to identify the proteins and factors within the extract and gain insight into the possible mechanisms of cardiac functional improvement.

The findings were published online and in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Molecular Therapy.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday inaugurated the Rs 1,684 crore (Rs.16 billion), 5.6-km Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), India's first open 8-lane, cable-supported sea bridge that will reduce traffic congestion in this metro.

The eight-lane freeway is expected to reduce the 40-minute journey to just 15 minutes for the commuters between Bandra, on the western suburb, to Worli in South Central Mumbai to just eight minutes.

Initially, the project was conceived at a cost of Rs 400 crore, to be finished by 2004. The cost has risen four fold to Rs 1684 crore due to constant change of plans and other delays.

Out of the total project cost, the Maharashtra government is expected to give Rs 580 crore as viability funding.

How to Upgrade Laptop's Harddisk drive

.

Are u planning to buy a desktop system or a laptop? Or do you want to upgrade your old system’s hard drive? Then without thinking twice you can just follow these simple steps that will totally reduce the risk of your system being affected with viruses. The first and the foremost thing that is required is that it is very important to keep a track of your system’s performance apart from knowing the hard drive space for movies, music, documents, applications and many other data.

A hard disk having SATA interface should be generally preferred for a good and large buffer cache, faster access to that data which is stored in your system. One of the biggest advantages of using a SATA drive is that it requires very less power and hence the battery of your laptop is very safe and will work for longer. A rotational speed in a drive means how speed the disk can spin on the drive. Thus greater the rotational speed, and larger the size of the buffer cache, better is the performance of the drive and thus increases your system’s efficiency. But the only problem is that the SATA drives are not readily available in the market, but cloning process will solve this pOne drive can easily be replaced by another drive like from a SATA to an IDE or USB to an IDE or any other combination that is feasible for you. It is not necessary for you to format or partition the target drive, a cloning software will itself do it, so your job is to only relax once you set up the drive of your interest.

A thing that is to be kept in mind is whenever you are installing any new hard drive, it is important that it is configured as a main C: drive. Most often, we tend to forget this thing because of the chaos that occurs while running an operating system from the previous drive to the new one. When your purchasing a system, make sure you have a better and fast data access, a quiet system and the one with a hard drive of high capacity to store data. These things in your system will help you to work and access in a better way. The latest hard drive technology in today’s world will help you to run your system in more effective and better way.roblem.

Pregnancy Sex positions

.

What sex positions are okay during pregnancy is one of the most common questions people ask about pregnant sex. This question exposes two problems with the way we think about pregnancy and sex.

First, we tend to still view pregnancy as a medical condition, and pregnant women as extremely fragile. While there may be health issues and complications with the pregnancy that make certain kinds of sex difficult, for the most part there is no need to treat sex during pregnancy with anything other than common sense, and no reason to treat a healthy pregnant woman as if she were weak or ill.

Second, we still tend to think about sex as if there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. In this case many of us have this idea that there is one right (or safe) way to have sex during pregnancy. This is not true. There are infinite safe ways to have sex during pregnancy, depending on what kind of sex you want to have. Another problem with this line of thinking is that it is very rigid (no pun intended). Great sex requires a flexibility of thought, and a willingness to try new things when the old ones aren’t working anymore.

As a general rule, a good sex position for pregnant sex is one where:

  • both partners are physically comfortable
  • the position allows for the kind of sex and physical contact you want to have
  • both partners avoid putting pressure on the uterus, or a partner’s full weight on a pregnant belly.

Experts say that women should avoid lying on their back or right side for long periods of time after four months into the pregnancy.

Beyond this, figuring out pregnancy sex positions requires some creativity, a sense of humor, and often lots of pillows. It may also mean abandoning penetration if it isn’t working, and finding other ways to please each other and please yourself.

If you’re looking for some ideas to jumpstart all that creativity, you might want to develop your own sex positions by exploring the sex positions game. If that seems like too much work, the following sex positions are generally considered to be more comfortable as your (or your partners) body changes during pregnancy:

  • The spooning sex position can be very comfortable as there is no pressure on your abdomen and you have lots of movement. Your partner can position themselves behind you at different angles to allow for penetration. Avoid lying on your right side in this position.
  • The side by side sex position allows for more equal physical contact than spooning, but penetration can be a bit trickier. You can cross your legs over each others and this may help. As with spooning, this position can be very comfortable as no one is feeling the weight of the other partner’s body.
  • The woman on top sex position offers the benefit of you being in control of the depth and angle of penetration. Later in the pregnancy you may find this position more tiring, and if balance is a concern you may prefer a lying down position, but others find this the ideal position.
  • The rear entry sex position is said to be good for g-spot stimulation and can be a comfortable change as it’s a position you aren’t in that often, unless you’re doing yoga. This position can either be done on a bed, or modified as a version of the next sex position.
  • The edge of the bed sex position offers many possibilities for greater comfort during pregnancy. You can lie on the bed (on your side, or briefly on your back) at the edge of the bed and your partner can be off the bed, either on their knees or standing up. Combined with the rear entry position, you can be off the bed on your knees (with a pillow underneath them) and rest your upper torso on the bed, with your belly off the bed.

Sex can stop a cold & Diabetes

. Monday, June 29, 2009

A healthy sex drive will leave you peaking in more ways than one. People who have a lot of nookie experience health benefits which can leave them in much better physical form than those who don't. Sex can help fight flab, ward off colds and make you live longer, as reported in The Sun.

According to Jennifer Bass, of sex research centre The Kinsey Institute, "There is definitely a correlation between health and sex. If you are healthier, you are going to have more sex. "Making love provides a cardiovascular workout and floods the body with feel-good chemicals."

Longer life

Sex is associated with good health and a longer life, a survey by the American Association of Retired Persons reveals.

Almost half of over-50s - 44 per cent - who described their health as excellent or very good had intercourse at least once a week.

But just 20 per cent of those with only fair or poor health made love this often.

It could be due to dehydroepiandrosterone - DHEA - which floods the body during sex and surges on orgasm.

Bloodstream levels of this hormone are five times higher than normal when sexual pleasure peaks. DHEA has been shown to be beneficial in fighting reduced insulin response and middle-age spread.

Blood pressure

In the heat of the hump, sex increases blood pressure but in the long run it reduces it - cutting the risk of stroke, says The Sun.

A study in Biological Psychology says regular sex lowers diastolic blood pressure - the lower number that shows the reading when your heart is resting.

Satisfying sex also increases output of the chemical transmitter dopamine, which improves relaxation and counteracts stress hormones associated with hypertension.

Low libido can also be an early warning of blood pressure problems. Doctors know that men who have hypertension are likely to have erectile dysfunction.

And Greek researchers recently discovered it has an even greater impact on women.

Four out of ten with high blood pressure go off sex, compared to three in ten men.

Combats diabetes

The exercise and calorie burning benefits of sex help reduce Type 2 diabetes risk.

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that DHEA, released when we orgasm, improves insulin action. It also combats central obesity.

Carrying weight around the stomach is a known risk factor for diabetes because the flab releases hormones called adipokines that seem to impair the body's glucose tolerance. Animal studies show DHEA protects against this damage too.

Heart boost

Men who have sex less than once a month are twice as likely to have a fatal heart attack than men who make love at least twice a week.

Sun GP Dr Carol Cooper says: "Sex is great for the cardiovascular system but how much you get out depends on how much effort you put in.

Bonking three times a week could halve the risk of stroke

"If it's not getting your heart racing, you're doing it wrong.

"Patients with heart problems sometimes worry about dying on the job, but that's very rare. If you can manage two flights of stairs you are probably fit enough for sex."

Because it boosts circulation, sex increases the supply of oxygen to cells and stimulates the activity of various organs and systems within the body.

Erectile dysfunction can also indicate cardiovascular problems.

Weight control

Sun fitness expert Nicki Waterman says: "Just 30 minutes of sex will burn around 200 calories, so if you have sex five days a week, that's equivalent to two-and-a-half hours in the gym.

"For best results, women can hop on top because this will help firm their thighs and tone their belly."

An orgasm can burn 60-100 calories, 30 minutes of snogging will blitz 90 calories.

And orgasms release both enkephalins and dopamine. These feel-good body chemicals help to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol which is associated with weight gain, particularly around the tummy.

They also flood the body with DHEA, which attacks belly fat, according to researchers at Washington Univeristy School of Medicine. Volunteers were given 50mg of DHEA and a second group took a dummy pill.

Women lost 10.2 per cent of their abdominal fat and men lost 7.4 per cent.

After herbal Viagra, now herbal Drinking water

.

After the successful launch of 'Laboob Sager', the herbal Viagra, a state-owned corporation of Tamil Nadu government would soon launch yet another health product - herbal drinking water, claimed to be first of its kind in the country.

It contained herbal extracts with useful bio-active properties that play a major role in maintaining good health as evidenced by Siddha and Ayurveda literatures and modern scientific studies, Tamil Nadu Medicinal Plant Farms and Herbal Medicines Corporation Ltd. (TAMPCOL) officials said.

The herbal water, to be sold in 1,000 ml and 500 ml pet bottles and competitively priced in the growing mineral water market, was likely to be launched in the next two months, company Chairman and managing director GA Rajkumar said.

TAMPCOL was in the final process of getting the ISI certificate and other related licences, he said.

The company had recently launched 'Laboob Sager', herbal aphrodisiac using an ancient 'Sastric' Unani formulation, billing the drug as substitute for the costly Viagra with "no side effects" and it become a runaway hit with good demand.

Rajkumar said the herbal extracts that would be added with the water include 'tulsi' (holy basil), 'nannari' (Indian sarasaparilla) and 'Adhimadhuram' (licorice).

"Volatile active properties from these herbal extracts are obtained by steam distillation process and are mixed with the drinking water in suitable proportions," Rajkumar said.

Rajkumar said packaged water companies were offering only pure drinking water. "These do not contain any health promoting substances. Our herbal water, certified by state Drug Licence Authority, will have elements that are good for health," he claimed.

Explaining about the elements, he said 'Nanari' herb mixed in this water was widely used by the people in 'sorbet' (sweet drink) for quenching thirst and for cooling effect and 'tulsi' was commonly used for better health.

He said the licorice with sweet taste and pleasant aroma contain many active principles and were widely used in many Indian system of medicines.

Quoting some research findings, he said it had been established that all the three herbal extracts were good sources of antioxidants which were helpful in fighting aging, cancer, renal diseases among others, he said.

"Regular consumption of the herbal water may help our body to get the benefit of antioxidants present in the water," he claimed.

TAMPCOL marketing manager G Ramanathan said the company would produce one lakh bottles of herbal water to start with. Initially, it would be marketed in Southern states. "We will be setting up another manufacturing unit, which would cater to the needs of the North Indian market," he added.

Spotting Narcolepsy in time!

.

Seeing spots? Hearing a buzz? Can’t take a breath? We all experience situations like these on occasion. Should we panic?

She woke up. Her eyes were open and she was aware of her surroundings, but she felt she couldn’t move. She tried to break free, getting scared and panicky. Then, she ‘broke free’. This isn’t an excerpt from a novel. It’s sleep paralysis and is familiar to many people. Just as lots of us often see spots, hear a ringing in our ears and tend to black out now and then. All of us experience these things on occasion. Are they signs of bad health?

Frozen!
Dr RK Mani, director, department of pulmonology, critical care and sleep medicine, Artemis Health Institute, says sleep paralysis is nothing to worry about. “There are two stages in normal sleep – REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM. The first is when people usually dream. There are quick eye movements and muscles are paralysed. When a person wakes up at this stage, the mind is awake, but the body continues to follow REM stage conditions. So people feel that they are paralysed,” he says.

Can it be prevented? Says Dr Mani, “No, but frequent occurrences of sleep paralysis combined with sleepiness in the day could be a symptom of narcolepsy.”

It’s all gone black
You stand up from a sitting position and it feels like the world is blacking out. According to Dr Vikram Singh, consultant, neurosurgery, at Moolchand Medcity, “This can be due to the inability of the autonomous nervous system to balance blood pressure when the body’s posture changes. It could also happen if the body’s fluid requirements are not met.” The other reason could be a problem with the artery that carries blood to the brain. “If you black out, consult a doctor,” advises Dr Singh.

All the world’s a dot
Do you see dots or filaments in front of your eyes? These are floaters – debris in the jelly-like substance (vitreous humour) inside the eye. They can also develop due to age-related degeneration. “Such floaters are not harmful,” says Dr Anita Sethi, consultant ophthalmologist, Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon. But she warns, “The sudden appearance of many dots along with flashes or pain can be a symptom of eye disease. If you see a shower of dots along with a drop in vision, floaters that are fixed at one spot or see lots of floaters and have red eyes, see a doctor.”

Short-sighted people are more prone to floaters; it could be a prelude to retinal detachment. Dr Sethi says, “It is advisable for people with floaters to get their eyes checked.”

Hungry for air?
Ever felt like you have to yawn in order to have a satisfactory breath? Dr Nevin Kishor, senior consultant pulmonologist at Max Healthcare, says, “This feeling is anxiety-related and nothing to be worried about.”

Did you hear a ring?
According to Dr Aru Handa, consultant, ENT, Moolchand Medcity, buzzing or ringing noises in the ear can be caused due to wax. He adds that in two out of 1,000 cases, these noises could be heard if a growth or tumour is pressing on a nerve in the ear. In most cases they are caused by the side effects of medicines and noise pollution.

Pakistan remains Among top 10 'failed states': Report

.

Pakistan, split down the middle with terrorist attacks and facing an economic crisis, remains among the top 10 failed states, says an index prepared by the renowned Foreign Policy journal.

The country, placed ninth among all countries last year in terms of its overall achievement, has improved its position only by a notch - it is placed 10th in the index for 2009 published in the July-August issue of the journal.

The annual exercise, now in its fifth year, is carried out by the journal and Fund for Peace, an independent research organisation.

The ranking is done on the basis of the following factors: demographic pressure, refugees/internally displaced persons (IDPs), group grievance, uneven development, economic decline, delegitimisation of the state, public service, human rights, factionalised elites and external intervention.

The top 10 failed states in the latest list are: Somalia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Guinea and Pakistan.

India is placed 87th among the 177 countries under study, with its score showing an improvement over the previous year. But its neighbours fare badly in this ranking, with Sri Lanka placed 12th, Bangladesh 19th and Nepal 25th.

At the other end of the spectrum, the bottom 10 in the list are the top achievers: Norway, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Denmark, New Zealand, Australia and the Netherlands.

Foreign Policy noted that it is "a sobering time" for the world's most fragile countries, what with the global financial meltdown, natural disasters, and government collapse.

"Yemen may not yet be front-page news, but it's being watched intently these days in capitals worldwide. A perfect storm of state failure is now brewing there... Many worry Yemen is the next Afghanistan: a global problem wrapped in a failed state.

"It's not just Yemen. The financial crisis was a near-death experience for insurgency-plagued Pakistan, which remains on IMF life support...All indications are that 2009 will bring little to no reprieve," the journal said.

The Faisal Mosque in Islamabad is the largest mosque in Pakistan and South Asia and the fourth largest mosque in the world. It was the largest mosque in the world from 1986 to 1993 when overtaken in size by the completion of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. Subsequent expansions of the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) of Mecca and the Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque) in Medina, Saudi Arabia during the 1990s relegated Faisal Mosque to fourth place in terms of size.

Faisal Mosque is the National Mosque of Pakistan. It has a covered area of 5,000 m2 (54,000 sq ft) and has a capacity to accommodate approximately 300,000 worshippers (100,000 in its main prayer hall, courtyard and porticoes and another 200,000 in its adjoining grounds). Although its covered main prayer hall is smaller than that of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca (the world's third largest mosque), Faisal Mosque has the third largest capacity of accommodating worshippers in its adjoining grounds after the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) of Mecca, the Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque) in Medina.[2]. Each of the Mosque's four minarets are 80 m (260 ft) high (the tallest minarets in South Asia) and measure 10 x 10 m in circumference.

The Faisal Mosque is named after the late King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, who supported and financed the project.

History... The impetus for the mosque began in 1966 when the late King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia supported the initiative of the Pakistani Government to build a national mosque in Islamabad during an official visit to Pakistan. In 1969, an international competition was held in which architects from 17 countries submitted 43 proposals. After four days of deliberation, Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay's design was chosen. Construction of the mosque began in 1976 by National Construction of Pakistan, led by Azim Borujerdi, and was funded by the government of Saudi Arabia, at a cost of over 130 million Saudi riyals (approximately 120 million USD today). King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz was instrumental in the funding, and both the mosque and the road leading to it were named after him after his assassination in 1975. The mosque was completed in 1986, and used to house the International Islamic University. Many conservative Muslims criticised the design at first for its non-conventional design and lack of the traditional dome structure, but virtually all criticism was eventually silenced by the mosque's scale, form, and setting against the Margalla Hills upon completion.

Location...t is located in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. It is situated at the north end of Faisal Avenue, putting it at the northernmost end of the city and in front of a magnificent backdrop provided by the Margalla Hills, the westernmost foothills of the Himalayas. It is a focal point of Islamabad, and a famous and recognized icon of the city.

Design...

The Faisal Mosque is the work of famous Turkish architect, Vedat Dalokay who won the Agha Khan Architectural Award with this project. The mosque's relatively unusual design fuses contemporary lines with the more traditional look of an Arab Bedouin's tent, with its large triangular prayer hall and four minarets. However, unlike traditional masjid design, it lacks a dome. The minarets borrow their design from Turkish tradition and are thin and pencil like. The interior of this prayer hall holds a very large chandelier and its walls are decorated with mosaics and calligraphy by the famous Pakistani artist Sadequain. The mosaic pattern adorns the west wall, and has the kalimah writtern in early Kufic script, repeated in mirror image pattern.

The mosque's architecture is a departure from the long history of South Asian Islamic architecture. It is one of the most outstanding and modern Islamic architecture examples in the world.

The Taj Mahal (pronounced /tÉ‘dÊ’ məˈhÉ‘l/; Hindi: ताज महल; Persian/Urdu: تاج محل) is a mausoleum located in Agra, India, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The Taj Mahal (also "the Taj") is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles.[1][2] In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."

While the white domed marble mausoleum is its most familiar component, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. Building began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, and employed thousands of artisans and craftsmen.[3] The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.[4][5] Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer.[6]

Laser Hair removal

.

Excess, unwanted hair is often a problem for a woman, or a man. Women frequently experience this condition on the face, especially the upper lip or eyebrow area, in the bikini area, under the arms or on the legs. Men often want to get rif of hair on their back or chest.

Laser hair removal systems use laser light an intense, pulsating beam of light to remove unwanted hair. Your doctor may use multiple treatments to target areas such as the face, upper lip, neck, breasts, chest, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line and legs.
A single treatment costs an average of $390, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

  • Many people have experienced long-lasting hair removal or permanent hair reduction.
  • It is considered safe if performed properly.
  • It's particularly useful for large areas such as backs or legs.
  • If regrowth occurs, it will be lighter in color or finer in texture.
  • Light-skinned consumers with dark hair have the best results.

Are you a candidate for laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is not for everyone. The most important requirement is that your hair must be darker than the surrounding skin. Tanned people with dark hair should wait until their tan fades before they are treated.
Darkly pigmented people absorb too much laser energy in their skin and are not good candidates.

What areas can be treated?

Any area can be treated, except near the eyes. The most common areas requested are the face, upper lip, neck, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.

Will laser hair removal hurt?

The level of pain from laser hair removal depends on the patient and the person's skin and hair type. Generally, the treatment tends to hurt less for people with lighter skin tones and finer hair. Most people tolerate laser hair removal very well.

If it is becoming uncomfortable, the laser technician can offer you topical anesthetic that numbs the skin. Depending on the type of laser being used, a cool laser tip, gel, or spray is always used to increase comfort of the laser hair removal treatment.

The sensation from laser hair removal has been described as discomfort rather than pain - similar to the feeling of a rubber band being snapped against your skin with a sensation of heat.

Permanent Hair Removal

The FDA does not allow for the marketing of technologies and services that state permanent hair removal. This is because most technologies provide for permanent reduction in hair growth 90% of the time. It is not perfect.

Gandhi's Statue to be unveiled in UK town

Hundreds of Mahatma Gandhi's followers from across Britain are expected to attend the unveiling of his statue by Home secretary Alan Johnson in the east Midlands town of Leicester on Friday.

The unveiling will mark the culmination of a two-year campaign by Samanwaya Parivar, an Indian charity organisation headed by Swami Satyamitranand.

Besides Swami Satyamitranand, the event will be attended by Indian High Commissioner Shiv Shankar Mukherjee and Labour MP from Leicester East Keith Vaz.

"It is absolutely wonderful that the new Home Secretary has agreed to attend and to unveil the new statue at this exciting occasion. I am so proud that only the second statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the United Kingdom will be based in Leicester," Vaz said.

The first Gandhi statue in Britain was installed in the Tavistock Square in London some years ago.

"This is the most important event of the year for the British Asian community and people are travelling from all over the UK for the event. This statue is an excellent symbol of Mahatma Gandhi's and Leicester's commitment to diversity," Vaz added.

The seven-and-a-half foot bronze statue by Kolkata- based sculptor Gautam Pal was recently shipped to Leicester. Samanwaya Parivar met the statue's cost of GBP 20,000.

The two-year campaign for the statue was surrounded by some controversy with several local residents opposing Gandhi's statue since he did not visit or have any links with Leicester.

The Leicester City Council, however, approved Samanwaya Parivar's request for permission to install the statue. The organisation said it will bear the cost of maintaining the statue located in a busy area mainly inhabited by people of Indian origin.

A multicultural town, Leicester has the largest Indian population in the UK outside London. By 2012, it is predicted that it will be the first city in Europe with a majority non-white population.

The next time you travel on London's Underground, Mahatma Gandhi's famous quote, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind", may catch your attention among the service announcements.

Not only Gandhi, quotations by Sartre, Einstein and other great thinkers will be interspersed between the service announcements as a part of a novel initiative by London transport authorities to make travelling on the Underground enjoyable.

Transport for London, the company responsible for the Underground, has commissioned award-winning artist Jeremy Deller to compile a list of quotations by Gandhi and others that can be mixed with the driver's announcements.

The initiative will soon be rolled out on the Piccadilly Line, and trials have already elicited enthusiastic response from passengers.

Driver Susy Wells told BBC during a trial "This job can be a bit monotonous sometimes. So it's brilliant and the passengers do love it".

Some passengers, however, were not comfortable with being compelled to listen to words of wisdom from great thinkers while rushing to work.

Pop icon Michael Jackson has died of cardiac arrest, according to media reports.

Jackson, 50, suffered a cardiac arrest at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him, an entertainment website reported.

The website reported that the pop star suffered cardiac arrest just after 12:00 pm (0030 IST).

Los Angeles Times, quoting city and law enforcement sources, confirmed his death.

Earlier, Jackson was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA medical centre here by the fire department paramedics.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda was quoted as saying by Los Angeles Times that paramedics responded to a call by Jackson's home at 12.26 pm (local time). The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took him to the hospital, Ruda said.

Jackson is survived by three children -- Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II.

The 'king of pop' was born on August 29, 1958 and debuted on the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of 'The Jackson 5', and began a solo career in 1971.

The singer was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993 but he could not be charged due to lack of evidence.

In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of further sexual abuse allegations and several other charges.

  1. If she is laying down draw one of her arms above her head and lightly hold her hand. Commence by kissing the soft area on the inside of her upper arm - from her elbow down to her chest. For variation, trail the tip of your tongue in a zigzag down this area. This absolutely drives my wife crazy! (submitted by Troy)
  2. Kiss her gently near the clavicle (colar bone), then run your tongue in a zig zag up to her ear very slowly. Give her earlobe a little nibble. It’s all in the neck guys… (submitted by Dave)
  3. When you’re sitting close to your love, start out by softly stroking their face, slowly move your hand to their mouth then very lightly brush the lower lip with one of your fingers. If they seem to love this, then place the tip of that finger in their mouth. My boyfriend loves this, and sometimes he’ll start sucking my finger a bit. This leads to a great french kiss! (submitted by KC)
  4. Gently kiss your partner on the neck, cheek, jaw, and slowly move closer to his/her lips. When you reach their lips, they will be all the more excited to kiss you! My boyfriend sometimes does this and it drives me crazy! (submitted by Christi)
  5. Start by pouring a glass of wine. Take a few sips to get the taste in your mouth. When you lead him to bed, bring the wine with you. While kissing him, dip your finger in the wine. Trace his lips and mouth with your wine-soaked finger and lick the wine off slowly and gently. Take your time. Kissing can be very erotic. (submitted by Heather)
  6. I play a kissing game with my wife. The object of the game is to make your partner try to kiss you. This could be done by lightly kissing her neck, breathing into her ear, kissing her cheeks, and lightly kissing her lips. Whoever lasts the longest wins! (submitted by Guntes)
  7. Sensually whisper something a litte bit naughty in their ear such as “I want you…” or make up your own. Let them feel your breath next to their ear, then kiss it and gently nibble it. Move down towards their neck and back up to their lips. This drives my husband crazy! (submitted by Gloria)
  8. When kissing…try to catch his/her upper lip between your lips as you’re closing your mouth, and suck lightly before letting go. (submitted by Ryan)
  9. When kissing really passionately, stroke the nape of his neck with your fingers. (submitted by Beth)
  10. Think of why you like certain body parts of your love, or why you love to kiss those body parts. For each area, give them a quick kiss there, then whisper why you love that part. Move up and down their body sprinkling them with kisses and sweet words. (submitted by Nora)

Safe Sex message missing South Asians in Britain

. Thursday, June 25, 2009

South Asians living in Britain aren't keeping a condom handy when they lose their virginity, new figures show, prompting safe sex fears.

Around 45 percent of British South Asians, who include Indians, Bengalis and Pakistanis, didn't have a condom handy the first time they had sex - a number that is considerably higher than the 23 percent of the British white population who were caught short the first time.

The evidence that safe sex messages are not getting through to British Asians comes from a new online survey by Fusion Condoms which polled over 2,500 Britons.

The poll by Fusion Condoms, which is owned by successful Indian-origin brothers Shandip and Ketan Shah, was linked directly to the British Department of Health's 'Condom Essential Wear' website.

The figures, released Wednesday, come after the British government's watchdog, the Health Protection Agency (HPA), warned this month that 21,000 of the estimated 77,000 HIV-positive people in Britain do not know they are infected.

The number of infections through heterosexual contact rose form 540 in 2003 to 960 in 2007 in Britain.

The new survey also shows that 60 percent of British South Asians have never taken up the offer of free condoms from their state-funded health clinic, compared to 50 percent of the British white population.

Worryingly, it showed that around 80 percent of British South Asians have never discussed sex with their parents compared to 65 percent of whites.

Fusion Condoms Managing Director Shandip Shah said: "It is clear that safe sex messages are not getting through to Brits, but particularly to the British Asian population. We must now find out why this is and deal with it fast.

"I suspect there are a number of different complicated factors at play as to why large numbers of British Asians are not using condoms, not receiving free condoms from their local health clinic and not discussing safe sex with their parents.

Shah called upon the British government, British Asian parents and role models to start to address the issue, adding: "What we mustn't do is bury our heads and ignore it."

Shah said the findings back up what he had seen while running his pharmacy: "I have consistently seen large numbers of British Asian teenage girls arriving at the pharmacy counter asking for the morning after pill."

Within Britain, the incidences of sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea in under-20s have more than doubled since 1995.

And nearly three percent of teenage British girls become mothers - the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe and very often the cause of later joblessness and poverty.

A 2008 survey by Ipsos MORI revealed that half of all under-25s don't use condoms with new partners.

Saudis train to Sell lingerie

Using colourful bras donated by employees at Victoria’s Secret, a group of 26 mostly Saudi women completed the first course of its kind to be offered in the kingdom — how to fit, stock and sell underwear.

The organisers hope the training will help boost a campaign to lift the ban on women selling underwear in the kingdom.

The graduates held a small ceremony at a college in the western seaport of Jeddah yesterday, capping 40 hours of instruction during which they learned to overcome their embarrassment at doing bra fittings, deal with customer complaints and display the stock in an appealing manner.

“'It was a beautiful experience,” said Faten Abdo, a 32-year-old coordinator in the offices of a lingerie company. “The most shocking thing for me was the bra sizes,” she added. “We didn’t know how to get proper measurements before.”

The 10-day course comes three months after a group of Saudi women launched a campaign to boycott lingerie stores until they employ women. Almost all the stores in the kingdom are staffed by men. The only exceptions are a few women-only boutiques, some of them inside popular shopping centres.

The restrictions are ironic in a country that goes to great lengths to segregate the sexes. Men and women, for instance, who are not close relatives cannot stand in the same line at fast-food outlets.

But those pushing for saleswomen in lingerie stores say they were tired of discussing intimate details with male staff and enduring their scrutiny when they ask for a particular cup size.

Their aim is to push for implementation of a law that has been on the books since 2006 which says only female staff can be employed in women’s apparel stores.

Pakistan court Dismisses Sarabjit's plea

The balance between life and death once again swung for Sarbjit Singh, sentenced to death by a Pakistani court in 1990 on charges of being a terrorist. On Wednesday a Pakistani court again rejected his review petition. His lawyer didn't turn up, apparently because he hasn't been paid his fees.

In India, Sarabjit's family was again left pleading for his life.

Said his wife Sukhpreet Kaur: "I would like to request both the governments to please come to an agreement and release my husband who is innocent and has suffered a lot."

So, what are Sarabjit Singh's options now?

First, if his lawyer submits an application in the court giving reasons why he could not appear and ask for another hearing of the review petition.

Second, the presidential pardon -- that is if the President Asif Ali Zardari accepts his mercy petition.

And third, if the Pakistan government passes the law of commuting all death sentences to life imprisonment. The law was proposed last year by the PPP-led government.

"We will appeal this decision," says Rana Abdul Hamid, Sarabjit's former lawyer.

Sarbjit Singh has spent the past few years between hope and despair. This latest development just another blow to a man who is fighting for a second chance.

The wealth of world's rich people dropped nearly 20 per cent to $32.8 trillion, while India saw the second largest decline in the number of High Net Worth Individuals at the end of 2008, says a report.

The population of HNWIs shrank by about 15 per cent to 8.6 million and in India, the numbers came down by 31.6 per cent to 84,000, says the World Wealth Report from Merrill Lynch and Capgemini.

HNWIs are referred to those who have at least $one million in investable assets, excluding primary residence, collectibles, consumables, and consumer durables.

"At the end of 2008, the worlds population of HNWIs was down 14.9 per cent from the year before to 8.6 million, and their wealth had dropped 19.5 per cent to $32.8 trillion.

The declines were unprecedented, and wiped out two robust years of growth in 2006 and 2007," the report said.

Interestingly, the wealth of such individuals grew about 7.2 per cent from 2005 to 2007 while their wealth rose 10.4 per cent during the same period.

"India's HNWI population shrank 31.6 per cent to 84,000, the second largest decline in the world, after posting the fastest rate of growth (up 22.7 per cent) in 2007.

"India, still an emerging economy, suffered declining global demand for its goods and services and a hefty drop in market capitalisation (64.1 per cent) in 2008," the report said.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the number of HNWIs came down the maximum in Hong Kong (-61.3 per cent) followed by India (-31.6 per cent).

Among the regions, the population of these individuals declined the most in North America (-19.0 per cent), Europe (-14.4 per cent) and Asia-Pacific (-14.2 per cent).
